Unfortunately for the underdogs there has been no upset in Round 5 this week-end. There might be one Tuesday though as WSL2 side Everton Ladies will be at home to WSL1 side Bristol Academy. There is no doubt that Bristol will feel the effects of that tough defeat in Champions League v Frankfurt on Saturday.
There is one surviving FA Women’s Premier League team in Charlton Women who won away to Coventry Ladies 2-1 in the WPL North v South game. Aston Villa defeated WPL promotion contender Sheffield 2-0 and Notts County defeated WPL Spurs Ladies 4-0.
In the WSL1 v WSL2 games, Doncaster Belles took the lead against Man City Women but it wasn’t enough and the WSL1 title favourite earned a 3-1 win. The other two ties were one sided with Chelsea beating Watford 6-0 and Arsenal hammering Millwall 7-0 at the Den.
In the only all WSL1 tie double league winners Liverpool were defeated 3-1 at Birmingham with the unlucky Chelsea Weston potentially missing the whole season with a suspected ACL injury.
So we are left with one WPL team, two WSL2 teams, five WSL1 teams in the hat for the quarter finals to be drawn later today.
We finally had an upset in the last game played on Tuesday as WSL2 side Everton beat WSL1 side Bristol fresh from their 5-0 defeat from the hand of Frankfurt. A 2-1 win in extra time for the Blues who will now play Charlton Women in a repeat of the old top of the table clashes from the Women’s Premier League old times.
