Year 2014 review games 41-50

41. London Bees res v Arsenal res 20th of May

A nice game with a good weather, groundman did not allow me to watch from one side of the pitch as they were relaying them, had to watch from behind the goal. And chase all the missed shots lol

42. Arsenal v Birmingham 21st of May

3rd defeat in row without a goal for Shelley Kerr’s Arsenal , Birmingham deserved winner and topping the table on the night.

43. London Bees v Durham 25th of May

Another game played at the the Hive, could have gone to Arsenal v Bristol or Chelsea v Notts but preferred to attend this WSL 2 game. Missed another Arsenal defeat without a goal scored and in the aftermath Shelley Kerr resigned a move welcomed by those who did not likewhat happened during the winter transfer window and disappointed her numerous fans. This would be the turning point in Arsenal’s season. 1 point in 4 at the break and 21 points in 14 at the end of the season.

44. London Bees v Reading res 28th of May

45. Arsenal res v Liverpool res 31st of May

Year 2014 review games 31-40

31. Tyreso v Birmingham 27th of April

Champions League semi-final game, played near Stockholm. A nice away trip, a warm and sunny day with an excellent hot-dog. Blues defeated 3-0 by Marta, Press etc…

32. London Bees v Millwall1st of May

WSL 2 League game played at the Hive, quite even.

33. Birmingham v Arsenal 4th of May

FA Cup postponed game, marred by awful refereeeing another recurrent theme during the season. Referees should NEVER influence the final result of a game.

34. Arsenal res v London Bees res 7th of May

An unexpected win for London Bees reserves if I remember well. Arsenal not performing on the night.

35. Chelsea v Arsenal 11th of May

FA Cup miracle for Arsenal winning 5-3 aet thanks to KellySmith saving the day twice. A very entertaining game in Woking.

36. Chelsea v Millwall  14th of May

Conti Cup game, WSL 1 team asserting its authority over  WSL 2 team.

37. Reading v Arsenal 15th of May

Shelley Kerr outwitted and outclassed tactically by Jayne Ludlow. First ever defeat for Arsenal Ladies against a lower division team in a big cup competition. Reading win 2-0.

38. Yeovil v Aston Villa 17th of May

A 1-1 draw where we were given VIP treatment by Yeovil. Enjoyed that half time break some much that we missed the equaliser right at the start of the 2nd half. A game of 2 halves with yeovil totally in control in the 1st half and tiring in the 2nd half as they played a cup game 2 days earlier. Bad scheduling by the FA, another recurrent theme.

39.  Arsenal v City 18th of May

Another defeat without scoring for Shelley Kerr’s Arsenal 1-0 against a City teqam that was struggling at the bottom of the table. The end of the Kerr era was coming closer and closer.

Games 11-20

  1. Reading v Chelsea 11th of Feb

Year 2014 review games 1-10

This is a short review of my 2014 year watching women football : games 1-10

  1. Southampton Saints 1 University of Portsmouth 2 5th of Jan

My first game of the 2014 year was played on a 3G and was between Southampton Saint and University of Portsmouth in the SW Combination league. Cold weather, some good football played. I don’t remember much of that game now besides the cold weather.

  1. Chesham 1 Larkhall Athletics 2 12th of Jan

FA Cup game, another cold day, 2 battling teams, a very competitive tie in a funny ground.

  1. Lyon 0 PSG 1 18th of Jan

Division 1 feminine game played at Stade Gerland. Huge upset on the day with the first domestic defeat for OL in 50 odd games. PSG parking the bus and hitting OL on the break. We had a few drinks with Megan Rapinoe after the game and she announced she was going back to Seattle earlier than expected.

  1. Montpellier 2 Soyaux 0 19th of Jan

I took a train from Lyon to Montpellier the next day and went to see another D1 feminine League game. Tough game for the home side. They scored two late goals to break the stubborn defensive block from the away side.

  1. Arsenal U17 Liverpool U17 01st of Feb

FA Youth girls Cup game. A game of 2 halves with a strong wind at Herts Uni on the 3G pitch. The game started late due to previous kids games on the same pitch.

  1. Arsenal v Oxford 1st of Feb

Club friendly played on the same 3G pitch as the U17 game. Cold and windy weather.

  1. Enfield v Chichester 2nd of Feb

FA Cup tie played at Donkey Lane, some good football played on the day.

8. London Bees res v Arsenal Ladies res 2nd of feb

Friendly played at the hive on the caged 3G area. Only saw the first half as was asked to move away from the standing area on the hill where I was watching the game, so I went home instead of having a view obstructed by the cage.

9. Arsenal U17 v Villa U17 8th of Feb

Horrible weather freezing cold wet and windy. I ended up watching 45 minutes before going to have lunch at the Galleria.

10.C&K Basildon v West Ham FA Cup 9th of Feb

FA Cup game played on a 3G pitch at Harlow Town. An excellent match program, a sunny weather but cold again.

My FA WSL 2014 Team of the year

Goalkeeper : Carly Telford ( Notts County)  . Keeping goal in the best FA WSL defense, best goals per game conceded rate  (0.62) . A very athletical and agile goalie. You do wonder why she has so few England caps when you consider the goalies’ performances that kept her out for so many years.

Defender : Lucy Bronze  ( Liverpool) playing at right back or center back in a back 4 or at wing back alongside a back 3.   She has the most touches per game in the whole FA WSL (88.43),  5th player in the number of passes received per game (37.64), 2nd in interception per game (4.14), 6th in touches in the opposition half (44.14) nearly exactly half of the touches she has per game. She is also 4th in the passes per game.

Defender  : Aoife Mannion  ( Birmingham) she had a very good season at center back and especially during the Champions League campaign against top quality opponents like Marta or Press.

Defender : Gilly Flaherty ( Chelsea) A very important player from the team that was close to winning the title. Leadership and leading by example.

Defender :Rachel Corsie ( Notts County) An excellent season for the Scottish defender in the best defensive team. Named captain as well.

Midfield : Leah Williamson ( Arsenal) The breakthrough player of the season. A year ago was playing in the U17 national cup in MK stadium and was back to win the FA Women’s Cup a season later.

Midfield  :Jo Potter ( Birmingham) Another consistent season for the left footed midfield player who was at the heart of all the play for Birmingham City Ladies

Midfield : Ji So-Yun ( Chelsea ) the typical playmaker, the natural number 10 rarely found in England.

Forward : Eniola Aluko ( Chelsea)  A fantastic season creating chances for the other forwards and usettling defenses

Forward : Nikita Parris ( Everton) She was most influential for Everton and the focal point. She was also clinical when things mattered at the U20 WC unlike other forwards.

Forward : Fran Kirby ( Reading) exceptional season for the Division 2 forward. 29 goals in all competition.

Subs and definitely worth a mention :

Goalkeepers : Libby Stout ( Liverpool) a great season for the champions for the American goalkeeper

Midfield : Kelly Smith ( Arsenal)  back to her best when available, a real shame she cannot play very often these days

Forward : Jess Clarke ( Notts) scored important goals for Notts and also created chances for others
