Arsenal v Wolfsburg preview

The Champions League is the competition where you can measure yourself with the best and see if the team is really good enough. Having failed at semi-final stage a number of times, Arsenal will certainly be motivated to reach the final at the Bridge on the 23rd of May.

The game against the Bundesliga leaders should be very open and no one should be fooled by the notion that Wolfsburg are champions league debutant. They are full of German international and youth international players in every position.

In term of team news, 2 Arsenal players should miss the game : Ciara Grant who is suspended after getting booked on both game against Torres and Kelly Smith who was still injured on Tuesday against Birmingham. Could she be back on Sunday. That would be a huge bonus for the team.

I believe Shelley Kerr will not make than one change from the team that beat Birmingham. The question is who will deputise at center back for Ciara Grant. The logical choice would see Jennifer Beattie take her place alongside Gilly Flaherty. Jenny has a lot of experience in the position for club and country and would add an extra dimension on offensive and defensive set pieces. The other choice would be Steph Houghton moving at center and Jayne Ludlow coming into the defensive midfield position. This is a reasonable option with Ludlow adding energy power and height alongside the 2 smaller midfield player Nobbs and Little. The negative is it would deprive the team from Steph’s exceptional quality and precision on long ball as seen in the 3rd goal v Torres at home : quick free kick taken 40 yards ball switch to Yankey on the opposite wing who crosse from Little to finish. She basically took out 7 players with that pass. Everybody knows the value of the first vertical pass in modern football and with Steph playing deep in midfield she can find Davison, Yankey or White for a decisive counter attack.

So my team prediction for the starting 11 on Sunday :
Byrne, Scott Beattie Grant Fahey, Houghton Nobbs Little, Davison White Yankey.
Subs : Spencer Tracy Bailey Ludlow Carter Bragg Bruton
